The Fort Davis National Historic site was active from 1854 to 1891 as a military post. It was used for the protection of emigrants, mail coaches, and freight wagons on the Trans-Pecos portion of the San Antonio-El Paso road and on the Chihuahua Trail. Today you can visit the site to see both ruins and restored buildings from the original post. Several buildings serve as educational museums.
